ADDISON, Ill. – For the 10th straight year, the University of Pikeville women’s bowling team is heading to the XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships after finishing first at the Addison, Ill., sectional on Sunday.
The team championships are set to be played out on April 16-18 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada. Sixteen women’s teams, made of the top four teams at each of the four sectionals, will compete for the national title.
On Sunday the Bears left little double of their qualification by finishing first with 13,341 pins in four sections of four-game Baker blocks. UPIKE was followed by Robert Morris (Ill.) with 12,916, Grand View (Iowa) at 12,691 and McKendree (Ill.) taking the final spot with a score of 12,350.
UPIKE is looking for its third USBC national championship after winning its first title in 2004 and most recently in 2008. Last year, the Bears took second place after losing to Maryland Eastern Shore in the finals.
In Sunday’s sectional play, UPIKE put up the second most points out of the four sites combined, trailing only Webber International (Fla.) with 13,362.
The Pikeville men’s team came up just short in their bid for nationals, finishing sixth at Addison with 12,127 pins.
Clarke (Iowa) took the fourth and final qualifying spot with a score of 12,333, showing just how close Pikeville came to qualifying its men and women. The men’s winner was Robert Morris (Ill.), who will be joined at nationals by McKendree (Ill.) and Calumet-St. Joseph’s.
Pikeville last advanced to the men’s intercollegiate team championships in 2011, losing to Robert Morris in the first round.
