RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Tied 7-7 heading into the 11th inning, the University of Pikeville baseball team loaded the bases and scored the winning run on a wild pitch to beat Rio Grande (Ohio) 8-7 on Friday at Bob Evans Field.
Centerfielder Brad Andrews paced the Bears’ offense, driving in three runs on two hits with a pair of stolen bases. Catcher Cody Chagnon and shortstop Chaz Contreras both drove in a run with doubles and right fielder Connor Osborne had an RBI single and drew a walk.
The RedStorm (9-12, 2-5 MSC) tying the score in the 10th inning allowed reliever Logan Sales to take the win, improving to 2-1 on the season after allowing a run on two hits in just over an inning of work. Corey Gilligan picked up his second save of the season after retiring the final two batters without giving up a hit.
UPIKE (16-9, 4-3 MSC) was up 6-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but gave up four runs over the next three frames, including two in a seventh inning with two errors. Rio Grande started the seventh with a single and double, then scored on a wild pitch and off a ground out.
Centerfielder Marcus Makuch delivered the tying run with a double in the eighth inning to bring home left fielder Luke Taylor from second.
Pikeville took a brief lead in the 10th inning with designated hitter Corey Adams singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a ground ball, and then ultimately scored on another wild delivery from the mound.
The RedStorm fired back with a run the more traditional way, getting a sacrifice bunt to put outfielder Carlos Flores on second before bringing him home with a single from Makuch. With Makuch on third after an error, Rio Grande attempted a squeeze play at the plate but he was tagged out by Chagnon.
Errors on the mound struck again in the top of the 11th as Pikeville had three straight batters walked with one out, combined with two wild pitches to score the go-ahead run. Disaster nearly struck in the bottom of the frame as Daryin Lewis reached first on an error and Anthony Knittel was hit by a pitch.
During the next as-bat, Gilligan was called for a balk and suddenly Rio Grande had runners on second and third with one out. Luckily for UPIKE, the next two batters grounded out to the pitcher and second baseman to end the game with the threat very much alive.
