PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville softball team fell victim to two more close losses on Tuesday, losing 5-3 in extra innings and 10-9 to Concordia (Mich.) at Paul Butcher Field.

While the Bears drop to 1-7 overall, six of the losses have been by two runs or less, which has showed the potential of the team as it gets deeper into the regular season.

Offense hasn’t been a problem as catcher Eady Beth Connally led the way, going 5-for-9 in the two games combined with four RBIs and two doubles. Second baseman Emily Castle tallied four hits for three RBIs and centerfielder Brandi Jo Howard impressed with three walks and a pair of stolen bases with three runs scored in the finale.

Miranda Owens took the loss in game one to fall to 1-1 after relieving Lauren Barnes who had allowed four runs on just five hits in seven innings with five strikeouts. Sydney Morris (0-3) was stuck with the loss in game two after scattering 12 hits for 10 runs in 5-1/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Concordia jumped out in front 1-0 in the first inning of the opener after first baseman Amy Tringo singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a groundout. Four scoreless innings followed before the Cardinals went up 2-0 with a run on a passed ball.

UPIKE made up for the miscues in the bottom of the inning when Connally roped a double into right field to bring home Howard and shortstop Taylor Weeks.

With the game tied 2-2, the teams headed to extra innings where the international tie-breaker was utilized. With Trionfi starting the eighth inning on second, she was moved to third with a sacrifice bunt and singled home to put Concordia up by one.

Before the top of the inning was over, the Cardinals added two more runs on a single and UPIKE could only score one run in its half of the frame as Castle’s two-out double scored Weeks from second.

The Bears will back in action at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, hosting Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), followed by another Mid-South Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Cumberland (Tenn.) at Paul Butcher Field.
