PIKEVILLE – Zach Nothwehr tallied six hits to drive in three runs and Chaz Contreras blasted a home run and stole two bases all while the University of Pikeville put together a doubleheader sweep of Lourdes (Ohio) on Tuesday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

The Bears beat the Gray Wolves 12-6 in game one, followed by a similar 11-6 decision in the finale. With the wins, UPIKE improves to 15-9 on the season while Lourdes drops to 0-4. Pikeville has a much needed two day break coming up after playing the past four days.

UPIKE ended up earning two lopsided wins, but it was Lourdes that jumped on top first with a two-run first inning in game one. Luckily it didn’t affect the Bears as they promptly put four runs on the board behind Contrera’s three-run bomb.

The Gray Wolves scored another run in the second and three more in the fifth, but Pikeville never trailed again after Contreras got the bats energized. Nothwehr doubled and later scored in the third to make it 5-3, but the game was put away with a seven-run fourth inning.

UPIKE strung together seven hits, including a Lourdes error to build a 12-3 lead heading into the fifth frame. Pikeville seemed destined for a big inning after starting it with a walk, bunt for a base hit and centerfielder Brad Andrews being hit by a pitch.

Tyler Williams (1-0) took the win on the mount after allowing three runs on five hits through four innings of work.

Game two saw the Bears flip the script and take an early lead with two runs in the first and four more in the third to lead 6-0. Catcher Cody Chagnon drove in the first two runs with a double to left field and finished off the scoring in the third inning with another two-RBI double.

Lourdes battled back within four at 7-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Bears didn’t let it hang around with three runs of their own in the bottom half. With the help of three wild pitches, UPIKE was back in a comfortable lead at 10-3 with two innings to play.

Jared Master’s earned the win to move to an even 1-1 on the season after scattering six hits for three runs in four innings with three strikeouts.

Pikeville will start a three-game Mid-South Conference series against Rio Grande (Ohio) at 2 p.m. ET on the road Friday.
