PIKEVILLE – After capturing the most winter regular-season championships in the league, the University of Pikeville made the biggest jump in the Mid-South Conference President’s Cup standings, going from tied for ninth to fifth, conference officials announced on Wednesday.
UPIKE made huge strides with four winter titles: including men’s basketball, men’s bowling, women’s bowling and cheerleading.
The men’s basketball championship is the first for the Bears since 2001, men’s and women’s bowling tallied their first MSC Championships and cheerleading pulled off the title in back-to-back seasons.
While UPIKE made the biggest jump in the standings with 59.5 total points, Campbellsville (Ky.) moved up a spot to take first place with 95.5. Cumberlands (Ky.), the former leader, is second with 89 and Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) is third with 82.5.
The MSC updates the standings after the fall, winter and spring championship seasons.
Points are awarded based on the final regular-season standings for each conference-sanctioned sport. The regular-season champion in each sport receives 10 points with second place receiving nine points, etc. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 season, the top-six male and top-six female team finishes for each institution will generate its overall totals.
The spring edition of the MSC President’s Cup standings - which will include baseball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s track & field - is scheduled to be announced in early May.
