PIKEVILLE – Corey Gilligan took the mound for just over five innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts, to help the University of Pikeville beat Purdue-Calumet 5-4 in game one on Monday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Peregrines went up 3-0 in the first inning of game two to hold on for the split with a 7-2 win.
While Gilligan put in a solid performance, the Bears committed three errors to allow three unearned runs to cross the plate. After falling behind 4-3 in the sixth inning, Logan Sales came in to take the win in 1-2/3 innings of work after UPIKE came back in the seventh.
Sales improved to 1-1 on the season after not allowing a hit in his brief appearance. Aurelio Cazares took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1-2/3 innings as well.
Center fielder Brad Andrews put together a strong line of one hit with an RBI, run scored, stolen base and a walk. Third baseman Erik Manning tallied a hit as well with an RBI and walk.
Trailing 4-3 in the seventh, the Bears got Andrews home on a Purdue-Calumet error and Cody Chagnon ripped an RBI single to complete the comeback and end the game.
After the feel-good ending in the opener, the Peregrines (1-3) jumped on top early in game two with a three-run first inning. UPIKE (13-9) fought back with single runs in the third and sixth innings, but Purdue-Calumet matched those scores in the middle of the game before closing out the win with a two-run seventh.
Jake Sokol dropped to 1-1 on the mound with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits in three innings. John Livingston went the distance for the Peregrines, giving them their first win of the season with a two run-seven hit outing with five strikeouts.
Pikeville was hosting Lourdes (Ohio) on Tuesday afternoon. The Pikeville-Lourdes baseball game ended too late to make this edition.
