PIKEVILLE – Behind the hot bat of newcomer Taylor Weeks, the University of Pikeville softball team picked up its first win of the season after splitting a Saturday doubleheader with Saint Francis (Ind.) with a 10-9 win and 8-4 loss at Paul Butcher Field.
Weeks tallied five hits in the two games combined with four RBIs, a double and three runs scored. The highlight of the shortstop’s day came in the final inning of game one when she hit a game-winning single to drive in designated player Courtney Morgan from third with the score tied 9-9.
Catcher Eady Beth Connally also had a big performance in the win, driving in three runs on a double in the first inning. The Bears scored all but one of their runs in that frame, plating nine to hold off the steady rally from Saint Francis.
The score was tied 2-2 after three innings in game two, but Saint Francis added six runs over the next three innings to take control of the game. Weeks delivered a two-run double in the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late to mount the comeback.
Game one featured the luxury of having a 9-2 lead after the first inning, but UPIKE watched the deficit get smaller and smaller as Saint Francis finally tied the score with a run in the top of the seventh. If it wasn’t for Weeks’ heroics the game was destined to reach extra innings.
Miranda Owens picked up the win in the circle, despite allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4 and 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. Sydney Morris took the complete-game loss in the nightcap, allowing eight runs on 17 hits.
Allen Central High School graduate Sarah Kinner was 1-for-3 with an RBI in Pikeville’s four-run loss.
The Bears will be back on the field at 1 p.m. ET on Friday against Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at Paul Butcher Field.
