PIKEVILLE - Rachel Potter and Savanna Nunemaker scored 17 points apiece as 59th District runner-up Pikeville defeated 60th District champion Belfry 47-31 in the opening round of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Wednesday night.
With the win, Pikeville improved to 20-12 and advanced to meet 57th District champion Johnson Central (20-11) in the semifinals of the regional tournament.
As a result of the loss, Belfry concluded its season 13-17.
Pikeville led at the end of each quarter. The Lady Panthers doubled up Belfry 10-5 in the first quarter and led 22-17 at halftime.
Pikeville extended its lead early in the second half, outscoring Belfry 12-5 in the third period to lead 34-22 heading into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore center Alexxa Gearheart scored seven points, junior forward Emma Looney netted four and sophomore forward Savannah Webb added two for the Lady Panthers in the opening round win.
Eighth-grade forward Taylor Maynard led Belfry with 11 points. Maynard was the only Belfry scorer to reach double figures. Narrowly missing double figures, junior forward Paige Goff finished with nine points for the Lady Pirates.
Seventh-grade guard Ariel Mounts scored seven points and junior guard Jaden Cisco chipped in six for Belfry in the season-ending loss.
The Lady Pirates’ leading scorer - Emily Baker - was limited to five points in the setback.
