BEATTYVILLE - Floyd County native Brian Hall has the Powell County Pirates back on top in the 56th District. Hall guided the Pirates past Estill County 49-48 in the 56th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament Championship Game at Lee County on Friday night.


With the win, Powell County improved to 11-18.


Both Powell County and Estill County advanced to the 14th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Perry County Central.


The Hall-coached Pirates outscored Estill County 26-21 in the second half to claim the win. Powell County managed to outlast the Engineers in a heated fourth quarter.


After outscoring Estill County 17-9 in the opening quarter, Powell County faltered in the second half. Estill County outscored the Pirates 18-6 in the second quarter to lead 27-23 at halftime.


Powell County used a 16-10 scoring advantage in the third quarter to move back out in front.


Brett Goodwin led the Prates with 16 points. Matt Brooks scored 12 points and Austin Mullins netted 11 for Powell County in the victory.


Trenton Jenkins scored 15 points and Chase Alexander added 14 for the Estill County in the loss.


Hall and the Pirates are scheduled to play Wolfe County in the opening round of the 14th Region Tournament at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday night.
