PRESTONSBURG - Three Allen Central players reached double figures in the scoring column as the Lady Rebels edged Betsy Layne 45-42 in the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament Championship Game at the Prestonsburg Fieldhouse on Thursday night.


Sarah Rife paced Allen Central with a game-high 16 points. Following Rife in the Allen Central scoring column, Krista Parsons registered 11 points and Elizabeth Prater added 10 for the Lady Rebels.


Brooklyn Martin netted five points, DeShea Elliott scored two and Kacie Poston connected on a free throw for the Allen Central girls’ basketball team.


The Lady Rebels owned single digit leads at the conclusion of each quarter in the postseason matchup. Defending 58th District champion Allen Central started strong, doubling up Betsy Layne 14-7 in the opening quarter. The Lady Rebels later led 25-19 at halftime but faced a much more efficient Betsy Layne girls’ basketball team in the second half.


After clinging to a 34-33 lead at the end of the third quarter, Allen Central edged Betsy Layne 11-9 in the fourth period to pull out the hard-fought win.


Allen Central connected on 19 field goals and finished 7-of-12 from the foul line. The Lady Rebels did not hit a 3-point field goal in the winning effort.


Chloe Johnson led Betsy Layne with 15 points. Accompanying Johnson in double figures, Katie Tackett added 11 points for the Ladycats.


Brandy Morrow had seven points, Kelsi Tackett four, Emily Kidd three and Megan Frazier two for the Ladycats.


Betsy Layne was limited to nine field goals but hit five 3-pointers. The Ladycats were 9-of-15 from the foul line.


Both Allen Central and Betsy Layne advanced to the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.
