PRESTONSBURG - Adams captured the Floyd County C-Team championship late last week, defeating Betsy Layne 21-6 in the championship game at the Prestonsburg Fieldhouse.
Jaxon Watts led Adams with a game-high eight points. Devin Hall and Jake Hyden followed, adding four points apiece for the Blackcats.
Adams moved out in front early, outscoring Betsy Layne 7-2 in the opening quarter. The Blackcats went on to lead 11-3 at halftime and remained out in front throughout the second half.
Adams, under the direction of head coach Dave Scott, led 15-5 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
“We made a good defensive game plan and we stuck to it,” Scott said. “We only allowed three points in each half. We stopped their penetration, which caused their big men to be non-effective offensively. We did a great job rebounding and we won the battle of the 50-50 loose balls. Offensively, we did a good job attacking the rim with our forwards Jaxon (Watts) and Jake (Hyden) and we were able to get their big men in a little foul trouble. That freed up Zach (Thompson) and the other big men to be aggressive on the boards. Our guards took care of the ball from start to finish. Also, we got a spark from our bench as those players came in and we never missed a beat. I’m so proud of this group. They came out with an edge and kept it all game. They gelled as a cohesive unit and became very close. It was a thrill to coach these young men.”
Grant Justice and Blake Slone scored two points apiece and Cameron Wright connected on a free throw for Adams in the win.
Three different Betsy Layne players scored two points apiece in the championship game.
