PIKEVILLE - Betsy Layne pulled away to win the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship on Thursday, defeating familiar foe Paintsville 64-53 in the title tilt at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
Junior guard Peyton Case led Betsy Layne with a game-high 23 points.
With the win, Betsy Layne improved to 15-2.
Following the loss, Paintsville fell to 5-8.
After the two teams battled back and forth in the opening quarter, Paintsville packed a hard-fought 18-17 lead out of the first period.
But the Bobcats, under the guidance of veteran head coach Junior Newsome, moved back out in front. Betsy Layne used an 8-4 run over the last 5:52 of the first half to carry a 31-26 lead into halftime.
The Bobcats led 43-30 at the conclusion of the third quarter.
Andrew Tackett and Dustin Rogers added 10 points apiece for Betsy Layne. Dylan Meade scored seven, Dalton Meade six, Dylan Hamilton five and Dalton Maldonado three for the Bobcats.
Zach Collins paced Paintsville with 14 points. Quinton Hensley was the only other Paintsville scorer to reach double figures, finishing with 13 points.
Just missing double figures, Luke Trimble finished with nine pints for the Tigers. Thomas Litteral followed, netting eight points for Paintsville in the short effort.
Luke Daniels and Darren Morris rounded out the Paintsville scoring, finishing with six and three points, respectively.
Former All “A” state champion Betsy Layne will meet the Region 4 champion in the opening round of the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic at the Frankfort Convention Center Jan. 30.
