PIKEVILLE - In a battle of former multi-time champions, Paintsville prevented Betsy Layne from advancing in the 15th Region All “A” Classic, defeating the Lady Cats 56-31 at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Wednesday.


Paintsville improved to 7-5 after posting the win.


Following the loss, Betsy Layne dropped to 3-9.


Senior guard Shelby Carroll, one of the 15th Region’s top players, paced Paintsville with a game-high 18 points. Carroll was the lone player from either team to reach double figures in the scoring column.


Narrowly missing double figures, seventh-grade guard Anna Keeton contributed nine points for the Lady Tigers. Junior forward Anna Claire Rice and seventh-grade guard Elizabeth Williams followed, chipping in six points apiece.


Presley Chirico and Kerrigan Sammons rounded out the Paintsville scoring, finishing with five and four points, respectively.


Paintsville took a lead out of each quarter. The Lady Tigers doubled up Paintsville 8-4 in the opening quarter and led 22-13 at intermission.


Paintsville stretched its lead over Betsy Layne after halftime. The Lady Tigers took a commanding 43-19 lead out of the third quarter.


Paintsville notched its second win over Betsy Layne this season. When the two teams met for a season-opener on Dec. 2, Paintsville won 53-33.


Sophomore forward Emily Kidd led Betsy Layne with a team-high nine points. Sophomore guard/forward Katie Tackett added eight points for Betsy Layne in the loss.
