PIKEVILLE - Tournament favorite Shelby Valley eliminated 59th District rival Pikeville from the 15th Region All “A” Classic on Wednesday, defeating the Lady Panthers 58-42 at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.
With the win, Shelby Valley improved to 9-4.
Pikeville fell to 7-6 following the loss.
Taylor Rowe paced Shelby Valley with a game-high 27 points. Rachel Smith accompanied Rowe in double figures, finishing with 11 points.
Defending 15th Region champion Shelby Valley moved out in front early, outscoring Pikeville 20-6 in the opening quarter. The Lady Kats led 37-22 at halftime and maintained a lead throughout the second half.
Courtney Wright (five points), Sydney Jones (five points), Savannah Honaker (four points), Destiny Anderson (four points) and Abigail Smallwood (two points) also provided scoring for the Lady Kats.
Honaker hauled in a game-high eight rebounds for Shelby Valley in the win.
Shelby Valley shot 42.6 percent (20 of 47) from the field. The Lady Kats were eight of 24 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.
Shelby Valley shot 76.9 percent (10 of 13) from the foul line.
Finishing strong, Shelby Valley doubled up Pikeville 10-5 in the final quarter.
Rachel Potter paced Pikeville with a team-high 17 points. Potter was the only Pikeville scorer to reach double figures. Savannah Webb netted nine points and Alexxa Gearheart added eight for the Lady Panthers.
Rachel Blackburn and Emma Looney rounded out the Pikeville scoring, finishing with five and three points, respectively.
