EASTERN - The Allen Central boys’ basketball team is on pace to equal its win total from the 2012-13 season this month. Allen Central, under the direction of head coach Brad Short, won four of its first five games. Heading into the 2nd Annual Hi-Tech Signs and Graphics Classic at Prestonsburg, Allen Central is 4-1. The Rebels exited the 2012-13 season 5-24.

Playing on the road in Hi Hat, Allen Central notched its third win on Friday night, defeating South Floyd 72-58.

Jackson City dealt Allen Central its first loss on Saturday, defeating the visiting Rebels 89-77. Allen Central, however, bounced back. The Rebels edged Phelps 83-80 Monday night in a home game at J.E. Campbell Arena.

Allen Central will compete in the Prestonsburg-hosted tournament along with Prestonsburg, Piarist School, Lee County, Magoffin County, June Buchanan, Shelby Valley and Elliott County.

Here’s a look around the 58th District.

Betsy Layne (6-0): The Bobcats remain undefeated with six wins opposed to no losses. Betsy Layne has posted wins over Phelps, Piarist School, Magoffin County, Prestonsburg, Male and East Ridge. Veteran head coach Junior Newsome has Betsy Layne atop the talent-heavy 15th Region.

Piarist School (1-2): The Knights defeated longtime rival Riverside Christian 84-50 for their first win back on Dec. 9. Piarist School has dropped 58th District games to South Floyd and Betsy Layne.

Prestonsburg (2-3): After winning two of its first three games, Prestonsburg has dropped back-to-back games to Betsy Layne and Sheldon Clark. Prestonsburg also suffered a loss to Greenup County earlier in the season.

The Blackcats defeated Russell in their season-opener.

South Floyd (2-3): After opening the season 2-0, South Floyd has dropped three straight games. The Raiders defeated Piarist School and Phelps to start the campaign 2-0. Since then, South Floyd has lost games to Allen Central, Jenkins and Letcher County Central.
