Ladycats handle P’burg

BETSY LAYNE - First-year head coach Randy Coleman guided Betsy Layne to a 58th District/Floyd County Conference win over Prestonsburg Friday night. At the Dome, Betsy Layne built an early lead and pulled away to win convincingly, defeating visiting Prestonsburg 58-38.

With the win, Betsy Layne evened its record to 2-2.

Prestonsburg fell to 0-4 after absorbing the loss.

Betsy Layne outscored Prestonsburg 12-4 in the first quarter and used an 18-8 run in the second period to pack a 30-12 lead into halftime.

Prestonsburg managed to cut into the Betsy Layne lead early in the second half, outscoring the Ladycats 17-11 in the third quarter. Betsy Layne, however, matched Prestonsburg’s run with a spurt of its own. The Ladycats outscored Prestonsburg 17-9 in the final quarter.

Chloe Johnson led Betsy Layne with a game-high 16 points. Brandy Morrow joined Johnson in double figures, contributing 11 points.

Kelsi Tackett just missed double figures, exiting the floor with nine points. Tackett also flirted with a double-double, thanks to grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.

Katie Tackett tossed in eight points while Eddi Akers and Emily Kidd added seven each.

Jana Jarvis led Prestonsburg with 16 points, sharing game-high scoring honors with Betsy Layne’s Johnson. Tiffany Meadows accompanied Jarvis in double figures, finishing with 11 points. Kassie Jarvis scored three points while Allyson DeRossett, Lauren Click, Jenna Layne and Jackie Kidd chipped in two points apiece for the Lady Blackcats.

Betsy Layne is scheduled to visit Prestonsburg Jan. 25.
