PIKEVILLE – Using a relentless defensive attack, the third-ranked University of Pikeville men’s basketball team overwhelmed Alice Lloyd College 107-70 on Sunday at the East Kentucky Expo Center.

The Bears (9-1) turned the Eagles over 18 times to finish with a 33-3 advantage in points off turnovers, while also dominating down low for a 66-46 edge in points in the paint. Add in the UPIKE bench outscoring Alice Lloyd’s 39-24 and you can see how the lopsided score happened.

Bruce Reed led all scorers with 21 points and Chris Cantino added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Keala King knocked down a pair of threes to finish with 12 points, Elisha Justice had 11 and six assists and Michael Eneh and Josh Whitaker tallied 10 points each.

Eneh reached 10 points in just eight minutes on the court, shooting 5-for-6 from the field. UPIKE shot 57 percent for the game, compared to 44.6 for the Eagles. Neither team was great on threes as the Bears went 7-for-22 and the Eagles were 5-for-16.

Stuart Stamper was Alice Lloyd’s (6-5) leader with 20 points and Tyler Rogers joined him in double figures with 16. Cody Malicoat pulled down a team-best five board to go along with five points.

Alice Lloyd scored the first two points of the game and tied the score at 11 with 14:12 left in the first half on a three from Stamper. But two minutes later the Bears had gone on a 10-0 run to lead 21-11 on a layup from Reed and the Eagles never got back in it, trailing by 30 late in the half.

Not a lot changed in the second half. Rogers’ basket with 15:32 left got the Eagles as close as they would get at a 25-point deficit. Cantino’s second-chance bucket seven minutes later put UPIKE up by 40 at 91-51, allowing the Bears to go on cruise control the rest of the way.
