BELFRY - The Prestonsburg girls’ soccer team earned its first trip to a regional championship game by edging familiar foe Pikeville 4-3 on penalty kicks in the 15th Region Tournament on Tuesday evening at Belfry.
Prestonsburg, a talented team under the direction of head coach Scott Porter, thrived early. The Lady Blackcats led 3-0 midway through the first half. Pikeville, however, managed to get going offensively. The Lady Panthers scored two goals with around 10 minutes remaining before intermission.
Both teams battled in the second half. Each squad had few goal scoring opportunities after halftime. Then, with around eight minutes left in the game, Pikeville scored, knotting the postseason contest 3-3.
Regulation ended with the two teams deadlocked 3-3. Two five-minute golden goal overtime periods followed with neither team finding the net. The scoreless effort sent the regional tournament game into the next tie breaker, which was penalty kicks. Prestonsburg prevailed by outscoring Pikeville 4-3 on penalty kicks.
In a rematch from exactly one week earlier, Prestonsburg was facing Lawrence County in the 15th Region championship game on Thursday evening. The 15th Region championship game ended too late to make this edition.
