RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Rio Grande looked every bit the second-ranked men’s soccer team in the NAIA on Wednesday, shutting out the University of Pikeville 7-0 at Evan E. Davis Field.
The RedStorm (8-1-1, 3-0-1 MSC) fired 29 shots in the game with 14 on goal, forcing UPIKE keepers Alfredo Piedra and Diego Rivas to combine for six saves.
The first goal came quick, as Pau Delgado Rodriguez finished a cross from Luiz Filho in the fifth minute. Rio Grande didn’t add its second goal until 38 minutes later when the exact same combo made it 2-0.
A minute later, Filho got into the act as well with his own goal, the first of three he would finish with for the game. By the time he finished a pass from Nikoy Wallace into the back of the net in the 81st minute it was a 7-0 advantage.
UPIKE (3-6, 1-3 MSC) managed 12 shots, including five on frame and trailed in corner-kick attempts as well, 7-5. Fouls went in favor of Rio Grande 18-9.
RedStorm goalkeeper Jon Dodson completed the clean sheet by making five saves.
The Bears return to action at 3 p.m. ET on Friday at Cumberland in Lebanon, Tenn.
