PINEVILLE - Timmy Miller opened the 2013 season with a two-round total of 141 (70-71) strokes to take fourth place individually for the University of Pikeville men’s golf team at the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off hosted by Morehead State (Ky.) on Monday. The event was scheduled to wrap up with two more rounds of golf on Tuesday.


As a team, the Bears remained well in the hunt for a top-three finish with a total day-one score of 600.


Tennessee Martin was the clear leader after carding a 568, but Murray State (Ky.) was second with 584 strokes and Walters State (Ala.) was third with 593, putting the Bears just seven strokes out of third place.


Miller, who finished with 23 pars and eight birdies over 36 holes, led a UPIKE team which also had Casey Castle finish in the top 20, tied for 16th with a 149 (74-75). Will Boyd was third for the Bears, shooting a 155 (76-79) and Samuel McGuire provided the final counting card with a 155 as well with the same round totals of 76 and 79.


Tanner Carroll finished just outside the top four, posting a 156 (76-80), just one stroke away from having three straight 76-79 rounds for UPIKE.


Walters State’s Brad Hawkins was the individual clubhouse leader after carding a 135 (70-65).
