A so-so quartet of releases includes one film that should have gone straight to video and another that should have had a theatrical tour before hitting the rental circuit.

“Epic” — Kids will like this adventure epic that finds a vacationing young lady drawn into a huge battle that is happening amongst tiny people who live underfoot. Turns out, the nature-loving elves who guard the wood are under attack by invading forces. Not much going on here, but the children won’t care. Grab a book and hand them little ones the remote.

“Scary Movie 5” — The latest entry in this comic series hits rock bottom. Anna Faris skips this one, which skewers haunted house flicks and the “Planet of the Apes” series. Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan show up, which begs the question, how did they get insurance for this project?

“Killing Season” — Robert De Niro stars as a military veteran who is guardedly living in Appalachia. He encounters a European tourist and the two become friendly, until De Niro realizes the guy is there for a reason and it isn’t good. Decent one-on-one survival action flick that benefits form a cagey performance from John Travolta as the tourist. When a flick starring De Niro and Travolta can’t get a theatrical booking, you know our culture is teetering on the edge of mediocrity. This one is worth catching, but you’ll be scratching your head as to why no one thought you would buy a ticket to it.

“Good Wife: Season 4” — Julianna Margulies continues to stand by her unfaithful husband, as he makes a bid for the governor’s seat in this excellent season of the legal drama. Her law firm is also in the crosshairs as they fight going over their own fiscal cliff. New characters pump up the drama, with Michael J. Fox returning as a sly lawyer and Nathan Lane joining the program as a financial watchdog.
