Once again the end of the month became a dumping ground for product that didn’t play theaters. Actually, it works out pretty well for genre fans this month.
“Adam Chapin: Violent Avenger” — That title should have got this supernaturally-laced revenge yarn into theaters, but it was not to be. The film focuses on a guy who wants revenge after the brutal death of his wife. Instead of breaking bad like Charles Bronson, he summons a demon that proceeds to rip the entrails out of the bad guys and anyone else who gets in the way. Probably the goriest flick you’ll see this year.
“Welcome to the Punch” — James McAvoy stars as a broken cop who is still recovering from an on-the-job incident. Turns out, a thief got the better of him and has left him a broken man. Then fate intervenes and he gets a second shot at the guy, but a conspiracy within his city may prove more dangerous than this rematch.
“Fangoria Presents: Sin Reaper” — A woman decides to seek out her back story after growing up in foster care, but this journey will end badly. Turns out, she came from a mysterious convent in Germany. She breaks in with some companions, only to learn it is guarded by the titular figure, who reaps the sins and the heads of whoever shows up. A slasher movie for the new millennium that doesn’t try to be anything else.
“Mystery Science Theatre 3000: Set 27” — This collection of episodes showcases a few of the worst horror movies ever made. They are easier to tolerate when you watch them with the MST3K crew, who are trapped in the theater and make snarky comments throughout. Great stuff ensues as they skewer dreck like “The Slime People” and “Village of the Giants.” Plenty of extras include chats with talent involved in the original films.
