The Big Sandy Walk to Cure Diabetes is scheduled for Sept. 28 at Big Sandy Community & Technical College Prestonsburg Campus. To help raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the first Miss Hope For A Cure-Stepping Out For Diabetes Pageant is scheduled to be held Saturday, Aug. 24, at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. This pageant, which is being put on by Floyd County native and Type 1 diabetic Emily Hall, will raise money for “Team Emily,” which in return will go directly to JDRF.


Several title holders from across the Bluegrass will be on hand at the first ever Miss Hope For A Cure-Stepping Out For Diabetes Pageant. Titleholders included fourth runner-up to Miss Kentucky and the current Miss Magoffin, Alison Lovely, Miss Bluegrass Area Annie Franklin, Miss University of Pikeville Hannah McIntosh, Pre-Teen Harlan County and second runner-up Petite Miss Kentucky Hailey Hamilton, Miss Teen East Kentucky Kirsten Conn, Miss Floyd County Holly Thompson, and Miss Mountain Laurel UPike/Miss Kentucky Mountain Laurel Festival first runner-up Brittany Rowe.


The pageant will feature entertainment from these local title holders and will begin at 6 p.m. Contestants ages newborn to age 24 are welcome to enter and anyone may enter the photogenic competition, as you do not have to be a contestant to enter this phase of competition.


Registration for the Big Sandy Walk to Cure Diabetes begins at 11 a.m., Sept. 28, with the walk scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. The walk will feature entertainment, kids activities, special guests, food, walk team t-shirt design competition, door prizes, and much more.
