PRESTONSBURG — Speaker of the House Greg Stumbo has broken his silence on the race for Floyd County sheriff.

In a letter submitted to the Times, Stumbo explains his unique perspective on the events that led to Brandon Spencer’s resignation from the Kentucky House of Representatives, and to Stumbo’s subsequent return from the position of Attorney General to the 95th district seat.

He says Spencer was reluctant to abdicate his position as state representative, and resigned from the legislature as a purely personal decision, to return home and be with his family.

Stumbo is also quick to point out that he makes it a point not endorse candidates outright in primary elections, and does not explicitly promote or disparage any candidates in the race for sheriff in his letter. Instead, he says that he wants to “set the record straight” so that voters can have all relevant information.
