PRESTONSBURG — A proposed budget for the Floyd County Detention Center shows a 14 percent drop in planned spending from one year to the next, which Jailer Cheyenne McKinney says is due largely to changes implemented recently.
The Floyd County Fiscal Court held a first reading of the jail’s budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year. The proposed budget drops from $2.9 million this year to $2.5 million next year.
McKinney said a quarter-million of the projected savings is due to recent actions to outsource the jail’s food and medical services. Back in January, the fiscal court approved contracts with Broadwell Food Service and Southern Health Partners, after McKinney negotiated the deals.
Another $100,000 in savings is due to a previously orchestrated reduction in the payment on the facility’s construction bonds.
The proposed budget includes $723,000 in salaries, $892,000 in operating expenses, $80,000 in maintenance and repair costs, $342,000 in debt service, and $463,000 in administration costs.
