EASTERN — A Corbin developer plans to begin work on a new Dollar General store at the intersection of Route 80 and Route 680 by the first of the month, with the store likely opening within three months.

Kentucky Lodging and Development plans to build a 9,200 square foot building to house the business. The store is expected to employ about a dozen people.

KLD partners Dave Huff and David Myers were at Thursday’s Floyd County Fiscal Court meeting, seeking magistrates’ approval for a request to close one road and accept another in advance. Both measures were approved unanimously.

The court voted to close Gosslin Branch Road, although the action comes years after Mother Nature decided to do away with the road. County maps show Gosslin Branch running 479.8 feet off of Route 680, parallel to Route 80, but County Judge-Executive R.D. “Doc” Marshall said one would be hard-pressed to find the old road.

“There’s actually trees and bushes on it right now,” Marshall said.

In its place, KLD plans to build a 481-foot service road that would allow access to the Dollar General site, as well as other properties that could be developed in the future. The road will have exits from both Route 80 and Route 680.

Prior to Thursday’s vote to accept the planned road into the county road system, Myers said the road would be built to county specifications and that the fiscal court would be under no obligation to accept the road, if it doesn’t meet the court’s standards.
