The last remaining unopposed incumbent on the fiscal court is unopposed no more.

Keith Hamilton, of Teaberry, has tossed his hat into the ring, to run for District 4 magistrate, against incumbent Ronnie Akers.

All the other candidates for magistrate have challengers running against them in May. In District 3, Magistrate Warren Jarrell is not only set to face Mike Tackett, of Wheelwright, in the spring, but he will also face competition in November, as that office is the only fiscal court office to have also garnered Republican opposition, in the form of Kyle Newman, of Martin.

Three candidates have also signed on to run for county judge-executive, including Bennie M. Lafferty, of Banner, Michael J. Pennington, of East Point, and Ben Hale, of Blue River. Incumbent Judge-Executive R.D. “Doc” Marshall has told The Floyd County Times that he is currently undecided as to whether he will seek another term.

In other county races, two more candidates have filed for constable. In District 1, John Holland, of East Point, has filed to runn against Lester Jarvis and Larry “Boss” Jarrell, both of Prestonsburg. In District 3, Billy J. Hall, of Hi Hat, has entered a crowded field, including Gary Tackett, of Hi Hat, Ernie Ray Moore, of McDowell, Willie Hall, of Melvin, and Kevin Lee Thacker, of McDowell.

On the state level, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, of Lexington, filed her paperwork to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell. Grimes is widely considered the front-runner on the Democratic side of the ballot, although she does face opposition from Burrel Charles Farnsley and Tom Recktenwald, both of Louisville. On the Republican side, McConnell faces challenges from well-financed Louisville businessman and Tea Party candidate Matt Bevin, as well as Gurney L. Martin, of Owensboro.

The election filing season has entered its final two weeks. Candidates have until Jan. 28 to file.

Those filing to run as of 3 p.m., Tuesday, include:
