A former judge-executive made public last week his intention to seek a return to that office.

Former Judge-Executive Ben Hale, of Blue River, filed candidacy papers with the county clerk’s office Friday, seeking the Democratic nomination for county judge-executive. He joins Bennie M. Lafferty, of Banner, and Michael J. Pennington, of East Point, in that race.

Also filing over the past week was Deputy Sheriff Steve Montgomery, who is seeking the position of District 1 magistrate. Montgomery, of Dwale, caused a stir at a recent fiscal court meeting by asking members of the court to donate half of their salaries back to the county, as a show of shared sacrifice during budget cutbacks. None of the magistrates indicated a willingness to do so.

Montgomery joins an already crowded race with plenty of star power, including current Magistrate John Goble, former Magistrate Gerald Derossett, and Prestonsburg City Councilman David Gearheart.

The race to replace retiring Circuit Judge John David Caudill continues to be a magnet for candidates, with the Jan. 3 filing of Prestonsburg attorney C.V. Reynolds. Reynolds joins Earl “Mickey” McGuire, David Allen Barber, Thomas M. Smith and J. Sam Doyle in seeking the judgeship.

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell filed his papers Monday for re-election. McConnell, the Republican Senate Leader, is facing strong opposition this year, with a primary challenge by Louisville businessman Matt Bevin, as well as Gurley Martin, of Owensboro. Whoever emerges from that race in May is expected to face Democratic Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes in the fall, although Grimes has not yet officially filed. The only candidate for Senate currently on the Democratic side of the ballot is Tom Recktenwald, of Louisville.

The Fifth District congressional seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers has seen its first candidate, with the Jan. 3 filing of Billy Ray Wilson, of London, on the Democratic ballot. Wilson is currently the only candidate to have filed.

Those filing to run as of 11 a.m., Tuesday, include:
