Early filings for 2014 local elections slowed to a trickle over the past five days, with only five more candidates submitting papers.
Three incumbents will be asking voters for support, although one will be seeking his first full term. Jailer Cheyenne McKinney, who was appointed to his position following the retirement of former Jailer Roger Webb, filed paperwork to seek his first full term in that office. Thus far, he and Dale Johnson, of Prestonsburg, are the only two candidates who have officially filed, although Stan Lee, Lowell “Dougie” Marcum and Lowell Samons all filed preliminary paperwork earlier this year announcing their intent to file.
In addition, Court of Appeals Judges Sara Combs and Janet Stumbo also filed for re-election Tuesday. As of yet, they are both unopposed.
Michael Pennington, who has already been advertising on television and billboards, officially filed Tuesday in his bid for the county judge-executive’s office. He and Bennie M. Lafferty, of Banner, are the only two candidates in that race so far, although incumbent R.D. “Doc” Marshall has also filed preliminary paperwork demonstrating his intent to file.
David Wakeland, of Betsy Layne, became the first candidate for constable in next year’s election, filing for that office in District 4.
