PRESTONSBURG - To a new mother, having a baby is the one of the most exciting times in her life. However, many new mothers often find themselves overwhelmed by the daunting task of breastfeeding. To add to the difficulty, new mothers are sometimes not given the support that they need when they need it most.

To help new mothers, two Highlands Health System employees recently completed a 5-day training course to become Certified Lactation Counselors. Amy Hyden, a registered dietitian, and Ashley Spriggs, a labor and delivery nurse, completed the course in Louisville, KY, and were certified by the Healthy Children Project.

Ms. Hyden recently commented on her certification, stating “Breastfeeding has several health benefits, not only for infants but also for the mother. We are excited to offer this service at Highlands to our new mothers.”

Increasing rates of breastfeeding have recently been identified by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as a health goal for Americans in its publication of Healthy People 2020. The CDC recently noted that, despite small increases, many mothers are not receiving care that is fully supportive of their breastfeeding intentions. Certified Lactation Consultants can help support these mothers and provide them with the information they need.
