PRESTONSBURG — Members of the city council discussed requiring each ordinance that comes before the council to be sponsored by a council member, during the council’s regular meeting Monday night.
Les Stapleton, the newest member of the council, proposed the change, saying he would benefit by knowing who to ask for more information.
“If there’s a name attached to it, then I know who to go talk to, if I have questions about it,” Stapleton said.
Other council members seemed amenable to the change in policy, but no formal action was taken Monday night.
The council also entertained a request from the Dance Etc. Senior Elite, seeking to allow the group to stage a roadblock in November, to raise money for the group’s upcoming trip to the world competition in Orlando, Fla.
However, city attorney Jim Webb cautioned the council that allowing the roadblock could be seen as the city taking action to benefit a private, for-profit business.
Regardless, council members voted to allow the roadblock.
At the end of the meeting, the council met in closed session to discuss personnel for an hour, but took no action afterwards.
All members of the council were present for Monday’s meeting.
