PRESTONSBURG — The Floyd County Board of Education met in a specially-called meeting on Thursday to put and end to their ongoing litigation with Stanville Properties, LLC, regarding the purchase of land near Betsy Layne High School for the construction of athletic fields.
Following an executive session on the matter, the board voted to accept a settlement deal that would see the school board pay $950,000 for the 20 acres of land, where they could build a new gymnasium and baseball field.
Floyd County Board of Education attorney Mike Schmitt says the owner of the land initially wanted to sell it to Kentucky Power, and the board was forced to begin court proceedings to condemn the land and block that sale. An appraisal has found the price reasonable for the landowner and acceptable for the Board.
“We’re just trying to make something good happen for the kids of Floyd County,” Board chair Jeff Stumbo said after the meeting.
