WEST WILLIAMSON – The annual Frank O’Brien 5-K race was held on Saturday during the King Coal Festival and several of his family members were present.
O’Brien was a local sports enthusiast, who founded the local race in its early stages. The Tug Valley Road Runners Club named the race in honor of the late O’Brien last year. The shirts the runners receive donned his picture on the front.
Several of O’Brien’s family members came from out of town to attend the local event. Several of his sisters, who reside locally, were also in attendance.
Some of the younger family members actually ran in the 5-K race.
“It is worth noting that other than myself and Aaron O’Bryan, all other family members were awarded individual medals for placing in the top three within their respective age group,” said Marta O’Brien, Frank’s daughter. “My family was very humbled by the kind words bestowed upon my father by both David Hatfield and Leigh Ann Ray. My dad so loved organizing this race year after year. He especially enjoyed getting to know the participants, many of whom returned repeatedly to participate. It is quite an honor for us that he is remembered in this way and that this race is now named in his memory,” Marta O’Brien added.
Here are the family members who were present for the race: daughters, Kelly O’Brien (Macomb Township, Michigan), Marta O’Brien (Versailles, KY); grandchildren: Connor Baumann (Macomb Township, Michigan), Liam Baumann (Macomb Township, Michigan), Kennedy Reister (Versailles, KY); brother: Joe O’Bryan (Troy, Michigan); sisters: Linda O’Bryan (Belfry, KY); Barbara Abshire (Stone, KY); nephews: Matthew Scott (Frankfort, KY), Jonathan O’Bryan (Troy, Michigan), Aaron O’Bryan (Troy, Michigan); great-niece Malia Scott (Frankfort, KY), great-nephew Joshua Scott (Frankfort, KY); and family members in attendance who did not run/walk, but who supported those who did included his wife Janice O’Brien (Belfry, KY), sisters: Mae Stallard (Williamson, WV) and Margaret Stanley (Canada, KY).
