PRESTONSBURG — Shirley Thomas, of Westminster Avenue, is the recipient of the Prestonsburg Women’s Club’s Yard of the Month award for July.

Thomas says she was “delighted and humbled” when she returned home to find that she had been awarded the recognition. She says she’s lived in the home over 20 years.

Around her walkways you can find several varieties of ornamental grasses, ferns, hostas, Kentucky and southern magnolias, and aucuba plants. Among the more exotic species she has planted are the Japanese painted fern, Brazilian butterfly plant, Serbian hellebores, and the only crinum lily plant hardy enough to endure the relatively northern latitudes of eastern Kentucky.
