The deadline to file for the November election passed Tuesday, with some races already settled and others up in the air.

The city of Wayland saw the most unusual result from this year’s filings, with only two people, Curtis B. Lee Sr. and Kathy Mills, filing to run for that city’s four city commission seats.

What happens next depends on whether anyone steps forward to run as a write-in candidate before the Oct. 24 deadline. If at least two people register as write-ins and receive votes, then the top two write-ins will take office alongside Lee and Mills. If write-in candidates do not fill either or both of the vacancies, those spots will then be filled via appointment by the mayor.

So far, it appears those appointments, if necessary, will be made by Wayland Mayor Jerry Fultz, who, along with Allen Mayor Sharon Woods, drew no opposition in their bids for re-election. Both could still face challenges, however, from write-in candidates.

Likewise, there do not appear to be any school board races this fall, as Linda Gearheart and Dr. Chandra Varia drew no opposition in their bid for re-election. They must still face write-in challenges to achieve re-election.

Democratic nominee for jailer Stuart “Bear” Halbert, of Martin, faces not one but two opponents in his bid to repeat his success from May. Halbert must face independent Doug Hopkins, of Wayland, and write-in Tracy Gilliam, of Blue River, in the November contest.

Other races that weren’t decided in the May primary include county surveyor and magistrate in Districts 1 and 3.
