A Dayhoit woman was arrested and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on Friday for various charges resulting from a car crashing into Don’s Super Saver.

Judy Napier, 49, was charged by Harlan City Police Department Officer George Young shortly after the 1:03 p.m. incident.

Police Chief Mike Thomas said Napier allegedly was moving a Ford Escort to be closer to the entrance to the store while waiting on her mother to finish shopping. However, in the process, Thomas said the car jumped the curb, hit a pole, crashed through the doors facing U.S. 421 and entered the buggy storage area where several people had just moved clear from and stopping before barely missing others who were manning a bake sale.

Thomas said Napier admitted to having taken prescription medication earlier in the day. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license, which are aggravated charges due to the vehicle striking the building, Thomas said.

He said she was also charged with criminal mischief and wanton endangerment.

Bond had not been set late Friday afternoon, according to Thomas.

“It could have been much worse,” said Thomas, adding the vehicle entered the area which normally is heavy with pedestrian traffic, especially on a Friday afternoon and the third day of the month — check day.
