HAGER HILL - Horsepower is headed back to Eastern Kentucky. Mr. Horsepower is ready to drop his arms on the Appalachian Wireless Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags, a local event that is poised to host drag racers and fans from numerous states. Kent Rose, Race Coordinator of the Appalachian Wireless Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags, spent Thursday alongside volunteers, working to get Combs Airport race-ready for the highly-anticipated event, which will be held Friday and Saturday.

In April, Appalachian Wireless made it official, signing as the title sponsor of the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags.

“We are extremely happy to have Appalachian Wireless as the title sponsor for the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags,” Rose said. “With this race, we’re honoring Wes Blackburn and Danny VanHoose, two individuals who were very instrumental in building the Arm Drop Nation. This race is dedicated to both Wes Blackburn and Danny VanHoose, whom we all miss.”

In addition to the title sponsorship, sponsors are in place for all of the Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags’ nine race classes.

The following classes (sponsors in parenthesis) will be offered: 6-Speed (Hubbard Racing), Street Tire (Kelly’s Radiator Service), Cage (City of Prestonsburg), No Cage (City of Paintsville), Diesel (Redlining Diesel), Outlaw (In Honor of Wes Blackburn), Street Tire (In Honor of Danny VanHoose); FWD (Mayor Jerry Fannin and the City Council of Prestonsburg) and AWD (Mayor Bob Porter and the City Council of Paintsville).

Early Thursday, Abco Security worked to prepare lighting at Combs Airport. Located between Paintsville and Prestonsburg, Combs Airport is once again taking shape as a speed mecca.

“We couldn’t do this without all of the sponsors and volunteers who are onboard,” Rose commented on Thursday. “We’re way ahead of schedule. We’d like to invite everyone out to the Appalachian Wireless Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags. But if you’re headed to the Kentucky Derby, the Knott County Trail Ride, another racing event here in the state, or wherever, we’d like to wish you good luck.”

Lizard Lick Towing’s Bobby Brantley will appear on both days at the Appalachian Wireless Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags.

Gates for the Appalachian Wireless Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags will open at 9 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Test and tune for the event will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday. Racing in the Appalachian Wireless Hillbilly Arm Drop Drags will get underway at 3 p.m. on Saturday with a test and tune session running from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
