EAST POINT — Veterans were joined by area emergency personnel and their families, Sunday, for the retirement of a number of worn American flags that also served as a patriotic celebration and a tribute to those who have sacrificed for their country.

Members of the Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars held the ceremony in conjunction with Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, as well as JROTC students and police, sheriff’s and fire departments from Floyd and Johnson counties, Sunday afternoon at the weigh station on U.S. 23, near the Floyd-Johnson county line.

Speakers at the event honored those who have served their country through military service and paid tribute to the flag with speeches and patriotic songs.

To retire each flag, JROTC members separated the stripes from the blue field of stars and placed each in a separate pile. The piles were then burned until entirely consumed, and the ashes were buried on site.
