The official start of the 2014 election season got underway Wednesday, as candidates had their first opportunity to set aside rumors and file to run for office.

Next year’s elections are expected to be a crowded affair, with nearly all county races on the ballot. The only county officers who will not be up for re-election are Commonwealth’s Attorney Brent Turner and Circuit Clerk Douglas Ray Hall.

But despite the expected onslaught of filings, the first two days of registration season were relatively quiet, with only 16 candidates filing papers.

Three races — sheriff and magistrate races in Districts 1 and 2 — are already fairly active, however, with each already drawing three candidates.

Candidates have until Jan. 28 to file their paperwork.

Those filing to run as of 3 p.m., Thursday, include:
