PRESTONSBURG — At home in a new building, the Floyd County Cooperative Extension Service is bubbling with new momentum and plans for a variety of new programs in the community.

Extension staff moved into their new digs Monday. The newly constructed office is located on Route 321 north of Prestonsburg, at the site of the old Plantation Motel.

Family and consumer sciences agent Theresa Scott said the new building will give agents the ability to begin offering a greater variety of programs for the community, now that they have the space, parking and conveniences that will allow them to do so.

“We’ve often said the extension office is the best-kept secret in Floyd County,” Scott said. “But we don’t want to be a secret, and with this new facility, we’re not going to be.”

The new building features offices for the entire staff, a large meeting room that can be turned into two rooms with a soundproof divider, two smaller meeting rooms, a commercial kitchen and plenty of storage space.

The potential uses for the building were reflected by its schedule the first two days of operation. On Monday, the building was christened with its first educational event, “Bountiful Beans,” which offered tips and information about cooking with beans, as well as recipes. The next day, the facility hosted a symposium on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, popularly referred to as “Obamacare.”

The Cooperative Extension Service is an educational program provider jointly operated by Kentucky’s two land-grant universities, the University of Kentucky and Kentucky State University. Specialty areas include agriculture, family and consumer sciences, and 4H and youth programs.
