ARKANSAS CREEK — Torrential rains and flash flooding took their toll on the county for a third week in a row.

Reports are coming in of significant damage to roads and culverts due to heavy flooding in parts of Floyd County. High waters in Arkansas Creek closed roads and ripped pipes completely out of the ground.

“It was just so much water that the pipes can’t hold it,” said Faye Conn, an Arkansas Creek resident.

Floyd County has been on the receiving end of intense, seasonally uncharacteristic flooding for several weeks. McDowell Elementary School was closed last week after heavy rains brought flood waters into the school and covered the parking lot in mud and silt.

Floyd County Rescue Squad members, who are specifically trained to deal with the flooding that is so common in the spring, have also found themselves tested this fall. Squads were sent out last week to rescue two families after flash flood waters entered homes in Slick Rock and Buffalo, as well as Left Beaver and Garrett.

According to the National Weather Service precipitation measurements, much of Floyd County is operating at 125 to 200 percent of its normal levels of precipitation for the month of August.

Floyd County Road Foreman Mike Jarrell said Wednesday night that Fisher Hollow and Shop Branch near Printer had both been hit hard, along with Arkansas Creek. Jarrell said the majority of the damage in Arkansas Creek was confined to the state road. He also added that he would know soon the extent of the damage caused to county roads.
