PRESTONSBURG — Dr. Robert Royalty, orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon, will offer sports medicine evaluation and treatment with the Highlands Black & Blue Clinic — convenient healthcare for student athletes, with no appointment necessary. On Saturdays, student athletes can simply stop by the Wellness Center on the fifth floor of the Highlands Medical Office Building in Prestonsburg from 8 to 11 a.m. for a free evaluation. Dr. Royalty’s staff will also work to make an appointment for athletes hurt during the week, simply call (606) 889-6255.
Highlands Black & Blue Services include all sports medicine needs, arthroscopy, cartilage repair, fracture treatment, joint replacement, labrum/shoulder instability, ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair, and rotator cuff repair. The clinic also services all student athletes including baseball, cheerleading, dance, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, wrestling, and is not limited solely to football.
At the Black & Blue Clinic, each athlete will be evaluated by Highlands physical therapists and by Dr. Robert Royalty, an orthopaedic surgeon fellowship-trained in sports medicine by Dr. James Andrews. The screening examination and initial treatment will be at no cost to the athletes. (Initial sports injury evaluations are free. Additional charges may apply for X-rays, supplies & follow-up visits.)
Dr. Royalty will also be working closely with Highlands’ board certified Neurologist, Dr. Ryan Owens, who can provide advanced evaluation and treatment of concussions. He can also help train coaches, team trainers or team physicians, and possibly set up preseason evaluations using the same computerized testing utilized at several colleges and NFL leagues.
The Black & Blue team strives to address athletic injuries within 24 hours of the incident in order to begin the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation process. The clinic will allow players with non-emergent injuries during the week (especially Thursday or Friday) to be evaluated by a sports medicine physician, instead of waiting an entire weekend to be seen.
