The Awakening, a religious revival with a unique focus on community, is coming to the Jenny Wiley State Resort Park on Sunday.

The Awakening is the brainchild of pastor and radio host Kevin West. Rather than having his Huntington-based ministries tour the country with their own set agenda, the process begins by opening a frank discussion among church leaders in the area with the intention of identifying a region’s specific needs.

In the case of Prestonsburg, pastors here made it clear that drug abuse is one of the most serious issues threatening the peace and the prosperity of the community.

The goal, then, is to take a spiritually-minded approach to working through such problems from the inside out. Often that means networking with local preachers, and placing an emphasis on cooperation between different rural churches and businesses, charities, rehabilitation centers, and other resources in the community.

The Awakening is completely free, and attendees are encouraged to bring friends and family. It is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m. at theWilkinson-Stumbo Convention Center, at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park.

You can find more information about the ministries, read blogs, and hear a podcast form of Kevin West’s radio show at kevinwest.org.
