PIKEVILLE — The Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has announced its membership with the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

The group has also announced Bruce Walters, of Walters Auto Group, as the Corporate Chairman of the “2013 Light The Night Awareness Walk,” the LLS annual fundraising event held each fall to raise money for cancer research and patient assistance.

Walters will lead an executive leadership committee that consists of proven leaders throughout Eastern Kentucky. The committee, under the direction of Walters, hopes to raise lifesaving funds for blood cancer patients throughout Eastern Kentucky.

LLS holds walks each fall in more than 200 communities across the United States and Canada. Participants at the walks carry illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold to remember those who have died – to honor and commemorate lives touched by blood cancer. In the Pikeville and Eastern Kentucky area, the walk will take place on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Pikeville City Park, in downtown Pikeville.

Light The Night Walk is the largest cancer fundraising evening walk in the country, attracting more than 500,000 participants annually. Because of fundraising efforts like Light The Night, LLS is the single largest nonprofit contributor to blood cancer research with nearly $73 million last year alone! Additionally, LLS provides more than $20 million in financial aid and co-pay assistance to cancer patients annually. The funds raised through corporate and individual contributions help to find cures and better therapies for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to provide information, education and support for patients and their families.

“The Light the Night Walk gives hope to patients and their families and lets them know they are not alone in their battle against cancer,” said Andrew Settle, Light The Night campaign manager.
