PRESTONSBURG - Fresh off an appearance in the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic, Paintsville dealt Prestonsburg its second straight loss, outlasting the host Blackcats 14-12 on Monday night.
Defending 15th Region champion Prestonsburg had an impressive late rally fall short. The Blackcats plated seven runs in their final plate appearance before Paintsville recorded the non-district game’s final out.
Kent Phelps started on the mound for Paintsville and earned the win. Spencer Taylor took over on the mound for the Tigers in the top half of the fifth inning, eventually closing the contest out.
Prestonsburg pitcher Bryce Tucker started on the mound and took the loss.
The two longtime 15th Region rivals were tied 2-2 at the conclusion of the first inning. Paintsville, however, built up an early lead. The Tigers scored multiple runs in each of their first three at-bats.
Paintsville owned a commanding 11-2 lead at the conclusion of the fourth inning.
Battling back, Prestonsburg outscored Paintsville 10-3 over the last three innings before falling short.
Offensively for Paintsville, second-place batter Ben Daniels reached base and scored in four out of five plate appearances.
Taylor Miller added two doubles and a pair of singles for Paintsville in the victory.
At the plate for Prestonsburg, Grant Anderson, Reece Ison and Jarrin Hall, the first four hitters in the Blackcats’ batting order, each scored twice.
Ison and Anderson finished with three and two singles, respectively.
