BSCTC to hold commencement ceremonies May 9, 10

PRESTONSBURG – Big Sandy Community and Technical College will hold is commencement ceremonies on May 9-10 at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg.

During the ceremonies, BSCTC will award more than 1,000 degrees, diplomas and certificates to 386 students. Since 2000, the college has awarded more than 14,000 credentials.

Students earning an Associate in Art, Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degrees will participate in commencement at 7 p.m., Friday, May 9, at the Mountain Arts Center. This ceremony will also include students completing diploma and certificate programs.

A pinning ceremony for dental hygiene and nursing graduates will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 10, at the Mountain Arts Center.

Michelle Blair Rainey, Brittany Pennington, Rebeckah Curry Hall and Gary Dean Hall will be recognized as the college’s Outstanding Alumni Award recipients.

Rebeckah Curry Hall and Gary Dean Hall will be honored during the May 9 commencement.

Rebeckah, of Prestonsburg, is chief financial officer of Mountain Comprehensive Care Center. She started at Mountain Comprehensive Care Center as a receptionist and used her education to climb the corporate ladder.

Rebeckah earned her associate degree from Big Sandy Community and Technical College and took night classes at Morehead State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Gary, of Virgie, attended BSCTC in 2010-11 before transferring to Southeast Community and Technical College, where he earned an Associate in Applied Science in Radiology degree in 2013. He returned to school after being laid off as an underground coal miner.

Gary currently works as a radiologic technician at Pikeville Medical Center.

Michelle Blair Rainey and Brittany Pennington will be honored during the May 10 pinning ceremony for nursing and dental hygiene students.

Rainey, of Banner, is senior vice president of nursing and assistant chief nursing officer at Pikeville Medical Center. She graduated from Prestonsburg Community College in 1995 with a degree in nursing.

Pennington, of Prestonsburg, is a dental hygienist at Martin Dentistry. She graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene from BSCTC in 2003.
