PIKEVILLE – Seven pitchers appeared in a slugfest that saw the University of Pikeville baseball team and longtime Mid-South Conference counterpart Georgetown College combine for 31 hits, but the fourth-ranked Tigers were able to use them for more runs in a 12-5 win on Sunday in the season finale at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

UPIKE closes out the 2014 season with a 21-30 overall record and 6-20 mark in Mid-South Conference play. While the 21 wins are the most for the Bears since 2001, they finished one spot outside of the field for the MSC Tournament. Georgetown, the regular-season MSC champs, improved to 38-6 overall and 23-3 in league play with the win.

After one inning, it looked like Pikeville might be in gear to rally towards the Tigers seventh loss of the season. Centerfielder Brad Andrews opened the first inning with a single and stole second. After left fielder Zach Nothwehr was hit by a pitch, first baseman Nicolas Gonzales hit an RBI double. Third baseman Erik Manning hit a sacrifice fly to score Nothwehr and the Bears had a 2-0 lead.

But the talented Tigers fought right back with two tying runs in the second inning before taking control of the game for good with seven runs in the third. First baseman Martin Lemus got things started with a two-run home run and four hits later Georgetown was up 9-2.

The Bears got within six runs twice but could never rally for more as their season came to an end despite a 4-for-4 showing from Manning and Gonzales driving in a pair of runs with two hits, including a double. Starter James Brooks (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in two innings of work.

Shaun Meyer improved to 7-0 on the mound for the Tigers after scattering 11 hits for three earned runs in seven innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Right fielder Tyler Coker had a big day at the plate for Georgetown, going 5-for-6 with two RBIs, a double and a run scored.
