PIKEVILLE - Betsy Layne scored first and never trailed on Wednesday night, defeating familiar opponent Sheldon Clark 9-6 in the 15th Region All “A” Classic at Pikeville.
On the mound, Betsy Layne pitcher Houston Hall registered 10 strikeouts in 5.1 innings and earned the win.
Sheldon Clark hurler Tanner Lafferty worked three innings and suffered the loss.
Thanks to the win, Betsy Layne improved to 6-5 and advanced in the 15th Region All “A” Classic.
Following the loss, Sheldon Clark fell to 6-2 and was eliminated from the small-school regional tournament.
The Bobcats, under the direction of head coach Bryan Dixon, scored nine runs on 10 hits.
Offensively for Betsy Layne, Dylan Hamilton, Brandon Akers and Dustin Rogers delivered two hits apiece. Rogers recorded three RBIs and Hamilton drove in two runs for the Bobcats.
Thriving defensively, Betsy Layne went error-free in the field.
Betsy Layne moved out in front early, scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. The Bobcats matched their first inning scoring effort in the second stanza to lead 6-0. Controlling the contest, Betsy Layne owned a 7-0 advantage before Sheldon Clark scored its first run.
Sheldon Clark pushed across two runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Prior to falling short, Sheldon Clark scored four runs over the final two innings.
Sheldon Clark scored six runs on six hits. The Cardinals struggled defensively, committing four errors in the three-run loss.
