WISE, Va. - The 22nd-ranked University of Pikeville men’s tennis team was on cruise control on Thursday, handling NCAA Div. II UVa.-Wise 9-0 on the road at the Jim Humphreys Tennis Complex.

It was the Bears’ eighth straight win.

The Cavaliers lost every match in straight sets except for Vlad Akimenko pushing UPIKE’s top-seeded Francois Billet to a 10-point tiebreaker which he won 10-7. Billet had lost the first set 6-4 before battling back for a 6-4 win himself in the second set.

But the Bears’ advantage started in doubles action where the third-seeded pair of Connor Smith and Billet finished first with an 8-0 win against Jon Saado and John Dotson. No. 1 Sven Rodenbusch and Dmity Babenkov topped Akimenko and Tanner Crowder 8-0 as well. Pikeville pulled off the doubles sweep with Pawel Tarasewicz and Marcos Fondelius getting by Chris Armistead and Juhan Washington 8-2 at the second seed.

Up 3-0, Pikeville got its first singles win from Sven Rodenbusch at the No. 2 seed with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Crowder. Babenkov finished off the win for the Bears by topping Armistead 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3 seed.

With the match wrapped up, the teams finished out singles play which allowed No. 6-seed Brennan Alderman to register his first win of the season after knocking off Saado in a pro set 8-3.

Other pro-set winners for UPIKE included Fondelius 8-1 and Felix Singer 8-0.
