HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Make it five straight wins for the 22nd-ranked University of Pikeville men’s tennis team as it routed NCAA Div. III McDaniel (Md.) 8-1 on Wednesday at the Hilton Head Springfest.

The Bears improve to 6-4 overall, while Green Terror drop to an even 2-2 on the season. UPIKE returns to action at the Springfest at 2 p.m. on Thursday against Illinois-Springfield.

Pikeville jumped out to a 3-0 lead over McDaniel after doubles play as top-seeded Sven Rodenbusch and Dmitry Babenkov rolled over Brian Kron and Matthew Langsdale 8-1.

Second-seeded Pawel Tarasewicz and Marcos Sernandez Fondelius made it a 2-0 lead with an 8-1 win over Seth McFall and Satchel McCarthy, while Connor Smith and Felix Singer completed the sweep with an 8-2 decision against Philip Jorgensen and Daniel Xinis.

McDaniel would succeed in just one match on the day as McCarthy topped Smith 1-6, 6-4 (12-10) in a closely-contested No. 3-seed matchup. Other than that it was all straight set wins for the Bears with Babenkov’s 7-5, 6-4 win over McFall being the closest the Green Terror got the rest of the day.

Vadim Kustov and Federico Toscano had the easiest time for Pikeville, claiming a pair of 6-0, 6-2 wins at the fourth and fifth seeds, respectively.
